Nordic contemporary art education and the environment: Constructing an epistemological platform for Art Education for Sustainable Development (AESD)

2012

How can art educators address questions of environmental sustainability, accepting to be ethically normative but avoiding becoming dogmatic? How can the complex ‘pool’ of knowledge generated in and through art education research become useful in working with these questions, which many of us find overwhelmingly difficult? AESD – Art Education for Sustainable Development – is a concept coined for this article with the intention of bringing environmental problems onto the agenda. In an attempt to provoke the necessary discussion about environmental sustainability in art education, the article examines selected texts from recent Nordic research in order to build an ‘epistemological platform’ t…

Teaching English as a Non-Imperial Language in an Underprivileged Public School in Spain

2018

This article summarizes the processes and findings of a 2-year collaborative action research (CAR) project that analyzed and aimed to counteract some of the most negative educational effects of English linguistic imperialism in the field of English language teaching (ELT) and, more concretely, in the context of English as a foreign language education in Spain. The CAR investigated the ramifications of this phenomenon in a primary school located in one of the most disadvantaged neighborhoods in the city of València. The pedagogical alternative it embraced in order to reverse the underlying tenets of ELT under present-day neoliberal imperialism consisted in combining art and multimodality thr…

Art as Inquiry: The Autopsy of an [Art] Experience

2003

In this article, I explore transgressive experience by embracing my personal encounters with art and life. In accordance with a phenomenological approach, I emphasize immediate experience, description, and analysis of the world as a source of knowledge and understanding. From the perspective both of art education and research, I attempt to show the enslaving effect of conventions. Furthermore, I trace and lay bare the origins of my transgressive experience from a methodological viewpoint by describing and interpreting the moments and threads that link them with time, place, and situations, thus making transparent my actions as a researcher. I travel upstream, first discussing writing, then…

Education on Sexual Diversity through Cinema

2014

Abstract Our proposal raises the urgency to include the defense of sexual diversity in the curriculum of Art Education. We provide visibility mechanisms to sexual minorities in personal and social order, and propose an approach to the subject, especially in training teachers. From aesthetic reflection we must foster a new critical look at Media Education. We should encourage future teachers to address these issues in their classes, appropriating the use and content of images. A topical issue such as the promotion of respect for sexual diversity has on films perfect ally. Suggest ideas about educational processes through a series of examples. From cinema and visual art can introduce reflecti…

The project developed learning environments as well as project-based learning with emphasis on the art-based methods and transversal competence approach to learning. The aim was to develop unique and communal well-being in learning. The project offered tools to strengthen teachers’ professional skills to use expressive, art-based methods in different curriculum-based projects. The visual principle and the correlation between teaching of the Catholic religion and art education in Polish school

2017

Contemporary culture – as already noted – is becoming more and more visual. Contemporary catechesis, referring to its rich, centuries-long experience, should also use different types of images. The first part of this article presents the visual principle as one of basic educating principles, and the second part presents the correlation between the teaching of Catholic religion, and art education in Polish schools. One specific example of using religious painting are in textbooks. Masterpieces of painting, created during centuries and expressing particular desires of their creators, still remain an important inspiration, among others, to the religious search. Faith, though strongly anchored …

Fear and Body. Art and Media Projects for Teacher Training.

2018

Media and contemporary art is important for teacher training. Art educators could link art experience with their own reality, and media evidences. Creativity deals with social, political and cultural issues. From an innovative perspective, we propose strategies for art educators. We introduce topics in the school setting, linked to the emotions, needs and students' life. Concepts such as 'fear' or 'body' allow us to investigate current problems. We approach the concepts from the work of Spanish artists Carmen Calvo and Anna Ruiz Sospedra. Methodology used mixed, combining Arts-Based Educational Research and Artography. We highlight the great acceptance by students of this process

A call for dissensus in art education!

2019

This article argues for the relevance of the term dissensus by the French philosopher Jacques Rancière in an art educational context in particular and an educational context in general. This argument is based on research referred to in this article, where the author made use of dissensus to analyse how encounters with contemporary art contribute to movements in youngsters’ ways of relating to artworks and the environment that surrounds them, as well as changes in the ways of relating to themselves and others ‐ what here is called events of subjectivation. As dissensus is seen as a premise for subjectivation, the author argues for initiating dissensus by introducing students to both art and …

Turning Right/Turning Left? : A Neoclassical Socioeconomic Query of the Arts Signaled by Museum and Branding in Finland

2016

ABSTRACTThe Guggenheim Helsinki Plan indicated a wishful turn of the arts and culture in Finland from the socio-democratic tradition of a welfare society towards a further neoliberalism. Following the Finnish historical timeline and from a museological viewpoint, this article reviews how national identity was built through the arts, which later integrated into formal and informal education to enhance human capital. This instrumental view now promotes the idea of useful art to fuel an innovation economy of advanced technology. Considering embarking on the intricate platform of arts, economics, and finance through Guggenheim, rethinking the contemporary art market mechanism may prove to be be…
